Gulja (Ili) Bike Trip

When in Ghulja, it seems like around every corner is a new amazing sight to see.  By taking a bike tour, we were able to slow down the pace of things and really take in the beauty that God has laid before us.

Setting out from Ghulja

Though I had not ridden a bike since middle school, I had thought that I was in pretty good shape and here, 4 km down the road at the Yili river, I was feeling pretty good; however, that day we still had 14 hours and 150 km up a mountain to go.

The Open Road - Xinjiang China

It is quite funny how the mind works.  To begin the trip, I was thinking about how easy it was and trying to think of ways to make it more of a challenge and more exciting.

At the 40 km Mark

At about the 40 Km mark, however, my muscles were starting to feel the burn and I started thinking maybe turning back would be a good idea.  But on we went, and, at about the 60 Km mark, I began thinking about how stupid I was for deciding to take this trip.

At 100 KM - Looking for a Gust of Wind

By the 80 Km mark, I began to hate myself, and, at about 100 Km, I shifted the blame to everything else including my bike and caught myself looking in the road for nails to hit and give me a chance to rest.  I even found myself parking my bike on the edge of steep drop offs hoping a gust of wind would come up and save me.

But, like all adventure trips, though it was difficult, now that I am finished with it I would not trade it for anything.
